The Simplest Home You Can Build
A studio suite puts the bed, the sofa and the kitchen in one bright room, with a proper bathroom off it. No hallway, no bedroom walls, less to build. For a single tenant, a grown kid or a student it's often all the space anyone needs.
It's still a full secondary suite, so it follows the detached suite rules in the yard or the attached suite rules in the house. Most of the design work goes into making one room feel like a few: a sleeping nook or loft, a kitchen wall that can disappear behind doors, and a window seat that earns its space.

A Commute That's Thirty Steps Long
If you work from home and the kitchen table is your office, a backyard studio might be the best money you spend this decade. A door that closes, a desk that stays set up, and no one asking where the scissors are during a call.
To be usable all year in Winnipeg, it needs:
- Insulated walls, floor and roof, not a shed with a heater in it
- A buried power line from the house, with enough capacity for heat
- Heat that keeps up at minus 30, usually a cold-climate heat pump with a backup
- Good internet, which often means running a data line with the power
- A footing or pile foundation that won't heave with the frost
It also works as an art studio, a music room, a gym or a guest cabin, as long as nobody lives in it full-time.

FAQ
Studio Questions
Short answers. If yours isn't here, call and ask. It costs nothing.
What is a studio ADU?
A one-room suite, sometimes called a bachelor suite, with the living, sleeping and kitchen space together and a separate bathroom. In Winnipeg it's a detached or attached secondary suite like any other, with the same 350 sq ft minimum.
Do I need a permit for a backyard office?
Most likely, yes. A heated, wired building of any real size needs a building permit, plus an electrical permit for the power run. It also counts toward the lot's accessory structure coverage, along with any garage or shed.
Can my backyard office have a bathroom?
Often it can, though plumbing changes the cost and the permits. What it can't have, without being permitted as a suite, is the combination of a kitchen and a place to sleep, because that makes it a dwelling.
Can I turn my backyard office into a suite later?
Possibly, if it's designed for it from the start: at least 350 sq ft, set in the right place on the lot, on a frost-protected foundation and with room to bring water and sewer in later. Converting a building that wasn't planned that way is usually harder.
How much does a backyard office cost?
Roughly $40,000 to $100,000 for an insulated, heated, wired studio with no plumbing, depending on size and finish. A studio suite you can live in, with a kitchen and bathroom, is more like $160,000 to $240,000.
